Tuina is widely acknowledged as the grandfather of all bodywork and is one of the three pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine. All the myriad techniques from every other bodywork modality can find their roots in the ancient science of Tuina. The direct translation from Chinese is “Tui,” meaning, “to press” and “Na,” meaning, “to rub.” Various hand techniques such as grasping, shaking, elongating, warming, cupping, pressing, rolling, and snapping, in combination with many other manipulation techniques and stretching, comprise this highly effective form of bodywork. Much of the time, but not always, practituinationers are licensed acupuncturists and may recommend the use of Chinese herbs or perform acupuncture. Tuina is one of the most adaptable traditional medical therapies available to patients and is therefore a highly recommended modality for almost any dis-ease. Patients are encouraged to test its efficacy by seeing how much physical relaxation they can achieve through breathing and meditation during the treatment. Injured muscles tend to want to contract further under pressure and deep work can be painful without the right breathing techniques. A good tuina practitioner will be able to tailor the session to meet the patient's needs, without causing pain or discomfort. If one is new to traditional medical massage, or has only experienced standard, watered down versions of traditional manual therapy like Swedish massage or Esalen, tuina is a great place to start because of the wide range of techniques that can be used, no matter one's experience. Tuina can be done fully clothed or not, depending on one's preference, but rarely uses oil. Sometimes liniments or ointments such as "dit da jao" (跌打酒) are applied to help speed recovery of injured muscles and tendons. These compounds vary greatly but are almost always family recipes, sometimes thousands of years old, with certain rare mixes having aged for hundreds of years. tuina New tuina patients can expect vigorous, energetic bodywork which uses fingers, knuckles, wrists, forearms, and elbows. Stretching and traction are also used to align the body properly.  Sometimes called "Chinese massage," it is this modality that you will get when you visit an acupuncture clinic or see a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
