Trigger Point therapy involves noninvasive trigger point compression, myofascial tissue massage, passive stretching, and a regime of corrective exercises for the relief and control of myofascial pain and dysfunction. The goal of treatment is complete recovery from, or a measurably significant reduction in, myofascial and soft tissue pain. Increased range of motion, strength, endurance, and other measures of improved function are goals of this modality as well. Therapists encourage their clients to accept personally responsibility for Trigger point pointstheir improvement by paying attention to factors such as nutrition, stress management, daily exercise, ergonomics, and other beneficial habits. The reason for this is to protect the client from delayed diagnosis, delayed treatment, or contraindicated treatment. The inside of everyone's body is covered with soft, malleable tissue called fascia, which encases every structure including organs, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. The particular fascia that covers your muscles is call myofascia. When the myofascia is injured from overuse or trauma it can tear and adhere together into palpable knots called "Trigger Points". These "trigger points" and can prevent the muscles from working well, cause pain and discomfort, and even limit range of motion. Trigger points lead to an increase in muscle stiffness and tenderness and a decrease in range-of-motion. In addition, the discomfort from trigger points can radiate outward from the from the adhesion, around the points shown on the image to the left. Muscles, and the myofascial tissue that surrounds them, are somewhat of an "orphaned organ" due to the fact that no medical discipline claims them, especially when we consider that there is a specialized area of medicine for almost every other area of the body (heart, eyes, lungs, intestines, kidneys, etc).   Because trigger points are such an extremely common cause of pain, myofascial pain from trigger points is often over-looked as a possible source of pain by those seeking relief. People who have stubborn muscle pain that does not seem to get better should consider trigger point techniques like myofacial release, and Rolfing.
