Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest, and most comprehensive forms of healing in the world. Acupuncture, moxibustion (burning an herb above the skin to apply heat to acupuncture points), Chinese herbal medicine, tuina (Chinese manual therapy), dietary therapy, t’ai ji, and qigong are all encompassed by TCM. Rooted in the ancient philosophy of Taoism dating back more than 2,500 years TCM is empirically based treatment that focuses on treating the patient as a whole rather than simply a group of symptoms. The three pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine are herbal remedies, acupuncture, and massage, and all three are utilized to benefit the patient and cure dis-ease. traditional chinese medicineThere are many different styles of practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine but all are based on the fundamental and easily understood principal of yin and yang. Yin/Yang represents the fundamental duality of nature and the universe, as well as the transition between extremes. Night becomes day, wet becomes dry, empty becomes full. Therefore when an organ system, such as the lungs, become deficient yin you may experience a dry, hacking cough. Your TCM doctor will prescribe herbs or acupuncture that supports yin function. At all times Traditional Chinese Medicine is looking for balance. For more advanced, complex conditions TCM employs a theory of five elements which describe and correlate to organs, emotions, senses, odors, flavors, instincts, thoughts, tendencies, cooking, sounds, colors... the correlations are almost endless. These correlations can be illustrated through the different cycles of the five elements, such as the Creation Cycle, the Control Cycle, or the Destruction Cycle to name a few. For example, in the Creation Cycle above Earth creates Metal, Metal Creates Water, Water creates Wood, Wood creates Fire, and Fire creates Earth. In the Control Cycle however, Earth controls Water, Water Controls Fire, Fire controls Metal, Metal controls Wood, and Wood controls Earth. Once the five element systems are understood, correlations are applied and a diagnosis of the patient can be made appropriately. The beauty of TCM is that the nature of yin and yang as well as the cycles of the five elements remain constant in nature, as in the body.
