Structural Integration is a type of bodywork that focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body. Fascia surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, organs, and nerves, binding some structures together while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other.  The body's fascial system might be imagined like a multi-layered wet suit, each Structural Integrationlayer is a fascial sheath wrapping the muscles and weaving in layers throughout the body. Because of fascia's inherent interconnectedness, any stress in one area of the body affects every other part of the body. For instance, tension in the connective tissue of the shoulder pulls the tissue throughout the torso.Fascia is designed to be elastic and move freely with muscles and bones.  Injury, stress, work-related repetitive movements and the effects of aging can cause fascia to lose its elasticity and become shorter, tighter, and more dense. Tightened fascia pulls our muscles and skeleton out of proper alignment and posture, which can cause pain, discomfort, and fatigue. Structural Integration works to lengthen, stretch, and soften this tissue to restore postural balance, ease of movement, and a Structural Integrationfeeling of being more at home in your own body. It is practiced in an organized series of sessions or individual sessions within a framework that is designed to restore postural balance by aligning and integrating the body in gravity. Often, patients will receive massage at the same time in order to prepare the muscles to "remember" their new postural structure. This is also why great chiropractors employ trained massage therapists before doing adjustments. When the skeletal structure is re-aligned without relaxed muscles, those tense muscles will simply pull the alignment back out. Chiropractic adjustments with massage generally last much longer than those done without massage.  Structural Integration is based on the work of Dr. Ida P. Rolf. It is practiced by persons trained in Structural Integration at schools and institutions in accordance with the standards established by the International Association of Structural Integrators (IASI). The primary formative influences behind structural integration therapies are osteopathy, Hatha yoga, and movement awareness therapies such as Hellerwork, Feldenkrais Method and Alexander Technique.
