The theory of cellular nutrition is critical to understanding the concept of  nutritional medicine. Oxidative stress is the production of free radicals during the utilization of oxygen at the cellular level to create energy in the body. These charged oxygen molecules are missing at least one electron and will attempt to replace it from the surrounding molecules. Antioxidants replace these electrons before the oxygen radical can create even more dangerous free radicals which can damage cell walls, proteins,  and even DNA! Proper nutrition is such a critical component of health that it can be found in the earliest medical texts ever written and continues to be discussed, along with proper exercise and breathing, as the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle to this day. Prevailing medical literature indicates that over 70 chronic degenerative diseases, such as coronary heart disease, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, diabetes, and cancer, are the result of these free radicals causing minor oxidative changes over long periods of time. The science of medical nutrition aims to  eliminate oxidative stress rather than correct nutritional deficiency. Although often both are very closely related there is a significant difference. Modern nutritionists will generally help patients to find the compounds in food they need the most due to their particular condition or medications. Traditional nutritionists will advise patients to consume foods that will help support various organ functionality or foods that counter various symptoms such as cayenne pepper for cold syndromes, or cucumber for constipation for example. Nutrition: A pile of fresh whole foods Nutrition: A bowl of rice congee with scallops. Chinese and Ayurvedic doctors will offer both foods and recipes that support proper organ function and energy balance based on their evaluation of the patient. It is worth noting that both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine include food as medicine as standard practice within those disciplines, and both have a long history of well documented nutritional treatment protocols.
