These are systems of bodywork that have arisen from a more comprehensive understanding of the body due to advances in technology and medicine. Modern modalities usually incorporate traditional techniques along with newly developed technology. Certain modern modalities rely almost exclusively on machines to generate an outcome, or inform the practitioner of the best course of treatment. The origin of most modern modalities can be traced back to one or more traditional medical practices and generally include manual techniques derived from traditional medicine. In many cases specialized instruments are used to affect the musculo-skeletal or nervous systems, or advanced forms of bodywork are utilized in order to condition one's body for specific purposes such as running, playing certain sports, or even the mastery of a musical instrument!
