Deep tissue massage therapy is best for relieving the painful, stiff "trouble spots" in the body that are usually caused by repetitive motion, or hyperextension. The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on both superficial, and deep layers of muscles, tendons, and other tissues. Though less rhythmic than other types of massage, deep tissue massage can be extremely therapeutic in a very short amount of time by relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries, such as back sprain. Especially useful before and after sports events and activities, deep tissue massage therapy can help to prevent injuries and strains prior to an event, as well as shorten recovery time after one. Deep Tissue When receiving deep tissue techniques it's best to breath deeply and from the abdomen. Often practitioners who integrate deep tissue into their sessions will press and hold trigger points within the body of the muscle, and wait for the tissue to release almost like a door opening. This process is facilitated by deep, relaxed, abdominal breathing by the patient. This type of breathing helps to saturate the blood with oxygen, which helps to relieve the muscle tissue, while static pressure breaks up the stagnation of cellular waste that causes knots and pain. Many deep tissue practitioners stress the importance of breathing during their sessions, indicating that it's up to the patient how quickly their musculo-skeletal issues can be resolved based on their breathing techniques. Generally deep tissue massage is used in conjunction with many other techniques where appropriate by integrative practitioners. Two of the main benefits of this modality is that it can be performed fully clothed and can be target specific rather than holistic, both of which make it ideal for people who need focused relief on a specific area of their body rather than a full body massage.
