The American Chiropractic Association defines Chiropractic Medicine as: …health care that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractors most often treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. Chiropractors practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. They have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. chiropractic The most common therapeutic procedure performed by chiropractors is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called an “adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.” mobile chiropractic neurology An even more advanced form of chiropractic care is known as chiropractic neurology, and is a relatively new specialty among chiropractors. Neurology treatment involves re-activating pathways in the brain, what scientific circles refer to as neuro-plasticity, by simulating other parts of the body.  Chiropractic neurology combines treatments that already exist, as well as developing new treatments. Currently, there are only 600 diplomate chiropractic neurologists in the world. Doctors who have earned their Diplomate have taken it upon themselves to go beyond the conventional confines of standard chiropractic medicine. After completing their education, chiropractors embark on an additional 2 year program that specializes in cutting-edge, neurology based, health care. Techniques utilized by chiropractic neurologists have been shown to be helpful in the alleviation of symptoms associated with chronic disease. A more complete understanding of brain and spinal cord anatomy, physiology, and function, allows chiropractic neurologists to treat very complex cases. This neurology program is the first and only chiropractic postgraduate course of study to be awarded full accreditation with the National Commission for Certification Agencies (NCCA) a branch of the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA).
